Thirty years ago this weekend, a studio in Derby put a woman with two pistols and a backpack into a Peruvian cave, and the medium never quite recovered. Crystal Dynamics marked the anniversary the only way a franchise this old knows how: by going back to the beginning. A new teaser for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the full reimagining of Lara Croft's 1996 debut, was shown on Saturday at TR30 in Derby and again on Sunday at MCM London Comic Con, before landing on YouTube on Sunday afternoon.

The timing is exact. Tomb Raider first reached shelves on the Sega Saturn in Europe on October 24, 1996, developed by Core Design in Derby, the city that held this weekend's celebration. The official channels describe the new footage as a sneak peek that "contains teases of iconic content", and the phrasing is deliberate. This is a teaser aimed at people who remember the original, built to make them hunt for the moments they already know.

What the Teaser Shows

The clip is short and favours rhythm over story. Insider Gaming describes Lara with dual handguns and a shotgun, swinging across ruined architecture and fighting reptiles, cut against cinematic shots meant to show how far the presentation has come. The official screenshots fill in the map, and anyone who played in 1996 will recognise its outline. There are jungle paths stalked by raptors, a Greek hall of colossal statues, and Egyptian tombs lit by shafts of sunlight. Those were the three acts of the original before the descent to Atlantis.

The structure is the original's, but the details are not. Crystal Dynamics and co-developer Flying Wild Hog are rebuilding the game in Unreal Engine 5, and Amazon Game Studios, which now publishes the series, has described it as a reimagining with "new surprises" rather than a faithful copy. The additions confirmed so far include a wrist-mounted grappling hook, an archaeological scanner for reading artefacts and clues, and a Focus ability that slows combat for precise shots. Lara is voiced by Alix Wilton Regan, who takes over the role in both this game and the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

The Third Time Through the Same Door

This is not the first time the 1996 game has been remade. Crystal Dynamics already rebuilt it once, as Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007), for the series' tenth birthday. A second remake of the same game, twenty years later, says something about where the franchise stands. The survival-reboot trilogy that began in 2013 turned Lara into a wounded survivor and drew a wider audience, but it also drifted away from the sunlit puzzle-rooms and acrobatics that defined her. Legacy of Atlantis is the series stepping back to the original blueprint, with modern tools fitted around it.

The visual language makes the intent clear. The twin pistols are back as Lara's signature, and so are the teal top, brown shorts and backpack of 1996, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. Her proportions are more grounded than the polygons of the original, but the silhouette is unmistakable. That is the balance the teaser is selling: a Lara who looks like the one on the 1996 box, moving like a character from 2027.

A Remake Under Pressure

The risk is the one every major remake now faces. Players who loved the original want its architecture preserved: the isolation, the long silences, the rooms that were puzzles in themselves. A modern blockbuster audience expects guidance, spectacle and constant feedback. The new scanner and grappling hook point towards the second group, and the most important question about Legacy of Atlantis is whether those tools fill the quiet the original was made of. A teaser built around gunfire and set pieces cannot answer that. It can only promise that the places are there.

The game was revealed at The Game Awards in December 2025 and originally aimed at 2026. In June it was pushed to February 12, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and pre-orders are open, including on Steam. Thirty years on, Lara Croft is returning to the cave where she started. The anniversary teaser makes a convincing case that the places will look extraordinary; February will show whether they still feel like the rooms people remember.
